The Director of Operational Excellence is responsible for directing all aspects of Operational Excellence and driving innovation. This person ensures that improvement initiatives are being developed and implemented consistently across the lab sites, focused on activities that continually improve key performance indicators while ensuring process and resource optimization, effective scheduling and efficient supply chain management. Utilizes best practices from Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC and change management methodologies. Facilitates and mentors operational excellence teams. Applies professional judgment based on the analysis of quantitative data and information while ensuring compliance with our quality procedures, regulations and adherence to industry best practices working in collaboration with lab operations management and executive teams.

Essential Job Duties

Business Operations & Strategic Oversight

  • Execute the Nelson Labs' business unit strategy and ensure alignment with our One Company values, mission, and operational goals for turnaround time, quality and utilization.
    • Talent Management of assigned production support staff to carry out the profitable volume growth, quality, service delivery, employee engagement and other department objectives with accountability.
      • Regularly meet one on one with direct reports
      • Ensure that personnel receive adequate communication and direction to perform their job functions by setting clear performance standards and expectations
      • Provide expert coaching and mentoring in Lean, Six Sigma, DMAIC tools and change management techniques
      • Lead and support the operational excellence managers
    • Preserve the company focus on data and personal integrity
    • Ensure regulatory compliance is maintained
    • Support implementation of all company safety initiatives
  • Operational Excellence working with VPs, Directors & Lab Operations Managers
    • Improve and optimize operational resource utilization
    • Improve and optimize operational scheduling of resources including personnel
    • Improve and optimize operational supply chain management
    • Collaborate with VP Operations, DLOS and operational or functional team leads to support project identification, prioritization and selection process
    • Evaluate automation opportunities to increase throughput and reduce cycle times
    • Identify and initiate cost saving projects
    • Complete projects within scope, budget, and on time
    • Consult with all sites and departments to improve Operational Excellence including 5S/Lean/Kaizen and ensure implementation and sustainability of programs
    • Maintain responsibility for setting standards for processes and environment in the sites to standardize production systems across the lab business (e.g. Lean, Six Sigma)
    • Create operations production support strategic plan in alignment with overall strategic planning and lab operation requirements
    • Develop recommendations and/or proposals for executive management review
    • Understand and manage business unit P&L, budget and financial metrics
    • Plan for business resources, personnel, CapEx using financial models and ROI
    • Manage and control expenditures within agreed upon budgets
    • Manage utilization and key production metrics with visibility to staff
  • Ensure company-wide communications are understood by the appropriate personnel

 Change Management

  • During mergers or acquisitions, provide support to key stakeholders to ensure that integration of new sites is successful.
  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts with internal departments across varying geographies.

Professional Development

  • Build and train culture using continuous improvement methodology.
  • Collaborate with the PDD to ensure personnel have adequate knowledge and training to perform their job functions.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Know and follow applicable regulatory requirements (GMP, GLP, ISO, etc.).
  • Know and follow company policies and procedures.
  • Complete required training on time.

Perform other duties as assigned


Bachelor degree and relevant experience required:

  • Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering or relevant discipline from an accredited university
  • Certification in Six Sigma, DMAIC and Lean (e.g. Black Belt accreditation)

Business/Management training required:

  • Seven + years of experience supporting manufacturing to improve methods and processes
  • Demonstrated experience with Lean Manufacturing including leading Kaizen events
  • Experience working with senior management and executive leadership teams
  • Proficient with use of computers, software applications, and spreadsheets
  • Proficient in data analysis, interpretation and development of meaningful KPI reports


  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, DMAIC and Lean techniques

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office and laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, keyboards, computer mouse, telephones, photocopiers, projectors and file cabinets.

Occasional travel during the business day. Some out-of-the area and overnight travel may be expected.
