Department Manager


Mon-Fri 8:00am-5:00pm

Job summary:

The Department Manager assists the Section Leader in providing business & strategic oversight of the section and manages day-to-day operations of the department, including resource & staffing needs. A key responsibility of the Department Manager is to manage workflow and project management within the department. Additionally, the Department Manager is accountable for regulatory compliance, policy & procedural compliance, and oversight of technical issues relating to tests conducted in the department.

Essential job functions:

Business & Strategic Oversight

  • Assist the Section Leader to plan and execute the section business plan, including the strategic vision for the section.
  • Coordinate with Sales & Marketing to increase department revenues and grow market share.
  • Align department goals and objectives with the NLI goals and objectives.

Department Management

  • Manage testing workflow and ensure resources and personnel are adequate to meet the requirements of the client.
  • Maintain and monitor production and quality metrics in accordance to NLI performance goals.
  • Develop and implement process improvements to increase efficiencies and reduce waste.
  • Manage personnel issues and provide timely feedback/reinforcement on performance.
  • Assist the Section Leader in managing and controlling expenditures within agreed budgets.
  • Meet regularly with Study Directors to assess resource needs.
  • Ensure adequate cross-training within the department to effectively manage changes in workflow.
  • Provide temporary assistance as a Study Director during heavy work periods, staffing transitions, and leave. Typically this would not exceed 50% of their time.
  • Ensure personnel receive adequate communication and direction to perform their job functions.
  • Ensure company-wide communications are disseminated to the appropriate personnel.
  • Ensure the NLI service standard is known and practiced within the section.

Regulatory & Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure personnel know and follow applicable regulatory requirements (GMP, GLP, ISO, etc.)
  • Implement quality process improvements to meet regulatory and client requirements.
  • Ensure personnel know and follow company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure counseling and disciplinary actions are taken when appropriate.

Professional Development

  • Ensure personnel have adequate knowledge and training to perform their job functions.
  • Ensure personnel receive and complete required training in a timely manner.
  • Implement talent management strategies to minimize unnecessary turnover.
  • Implement succession planning to ensure business continuity.

Physical requirements:

Must be able to stand/walk for 35% of the day and 65% of the day spent sitting at a desk or on the computer. Must also be able to lift minimum of 40lbs.


Education and experience requirements:

A.A. /A.S. and four (4) years NLI laboratory experience or a B.S. degree (microbiology or biological science strongly preferred for laboratory positions or NLI equivalent) OR three (3) years NLI experience with demonstrated proficiency for management and/or technical merit.  This position will be determined by a Career Board.    

Laboratory Requirements: (Lab positions require a minimum of one of the following)

  1. NRM-RM/SM or NLM (Nelson Labs program)
  2. Quality certification, may include CQE or CQM
  3. Chemistry certification (approved by Career Board)
  4. Other job specific certifications 
  5. Sterilization Specialist certification (Nelson Labs program)

Business/Management Requirements: (All Department Manager roles require a minimum of two of the following)

  1. Supervisory Training or experience (approved by Career Board)
  2. Business Training or experience (approved by Career Board)
  3. MIT or Leadership Development Program
  4. M.B.A.
